Dibangar Dutta sworn in as Supreme Court judge

  • The Supreme Court has vacancies for 34 judges, including the Chief Justice; Seven seats were vacant. In this case, the 'collegium' led by the Chief Justice had recently recommended to the central government to appoint Dibangar Dutta, who was the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, as a Supreme Court judge.
  • Following this, the Union Law Ministry approved the appointment of Dibangar Dutta as a judge of the Supreme Court. Dipankar Dutta was sworn in at the event held in the Supreme Court.
  • Chief Justice DY Chandrachud administered the oath of office to him. He will hold office till February 2030. Subsequently, the number of Supreme Court judges has increased to 28. Justice Dipankar Dutta is the son of former Calcutta High Court Judge Salil Kumar Dutta.
The Energy Security Amendment Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha
  • Union Power Minister RK Singh tabled the Energy Security Amendment Bill in the Rajya Sabha on the 8th. This bill has been introduced to mandate the use of non-fossil fuels including ethanol, hydrogen and biomass.

Industrial production fell 4% last October
  • Industrial production fell 4 percent last October. The manufacturing point index was 4.2 percent in the corresponding month of the previous year. A maximum of minus 7.1 was recorded in August 2020.
  • Goods production grew by 3.3 percent in the previous year. Mining production fell by 2.5 percent, capital goods production by 2.3 percent, consumer goods production by 15.3 percent, and non-consumer goods production by 13.4 percent.
  • Industrial production fell by 5.3 percent in the April-October period of the current fiscal year. It was 20.5 percent in the previous year.
