Finland, Sweden in NATO - US Congress approved

  • The United States Parliament has approved the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO. 95 votes in favor and 1 vote against were recorded in the Senate, the upper house of parliament.
  • Finland and Sweden, which followed a non-aligned policy until Russia's invasion of Ukraine, reversed their positions after that invasion and applied to join NATO. All 30 of its member states must agree to include those countries in NATO. In this case, the US Parliament has approved it.
Lalit becomes Chief Justice of Supreme Court on Ramana's recommendation
  • The post of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is conferred on the basis of seniority. It is customary for the Chief Justice in charge to recommend to the Union Government who should be appointed as Chief Justice after him before his retirement. Presently, Chief Justice NV Ramana will retire on the 27th.
  • Following this, the Union Government sent a letter yesterday to Ramana to suggest who should be appointed as the new Chief Justice.
  • In this case, a meeting of the Supreme Court collegium was held. According to the decision, Chief Justice NV Ramana has recommended that Justice YU Lalit, who is the current senior judge of the Supreme Court and who is second in line to Ramana, be appointed as the next Chief Justice.
  • U.U.Lalit will be sworn in as the 49th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on the 27th after the approval of the Union Law Department and the President.
The Prime Minister laid foundation stones for various projects at Shrimad Rajchandra Mission in Dharampur, Gujarat
  • Prime Minister inaugurated various projects of Srimad Rajchandra Mission in Dharampur under Valsad district of Gujarat through video and laid foundation stone for new projects. Gujarat Chief Minister Mr. Bhupendrabhai Patel and others participated in the event.
  • Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that the hospital projects would be of great service to women and other needy sections of the society. He also praised Srimad Rajchandra Mission for serving peacefully.
First session of India-Mauritius High Power Trade Group
  • The first session of the India-Mauritius High Power Business Group was held in New Delhi from 1st to 3rd August 2022. The meeting was jointly chaired by Dr. Sreekar K Reddy, Joint Secretary, Department of Trade and Industry, Government of India, and Mr. Narayan Dutt Bhutto, Director, Trade Policy, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of Mauritius.
  • A High Level Joint Trade Committee was set up to review the general functioning and implementation of the India-Mauritius Integrated Economic Cooperation and Contribution Agreement, effective from 1 April 2021. This agreement is the first agreement signed by India with an African country.
  • The meeting appreciated the increase in bilateral trade between the two countries from USD 690.02 million in 2019-20 to USD 786.72 million in 2021-22. Both sides agreed to further enhance this cooperation.
  • Both sides expressed willingness to enter into a mutual customs administrative assistance agreement. It was also agreed to start discussions in this regard soon. In this meeting, both sides decided to hold the next session in 2023.
India wins 1 silver, 4 bronze medals on Day 6 of Commonwealth Games 2022
  • India won one silver and 4 bronze medals on Day 6 of Commonwealth Games 2022. After Lovepreet Singh won bronze, judoka Dulika Mann won silver in 78 kg category and Gurdeep Singh won bronze in men's weightlifting 109 kg category.
  • Saurav Ghoshal and Tejaswin Shankar also won bronze medals in the high jump event of the athletics category. With this victory, India has won a medal for the first time in the athletics category.
  • India has won a total of 18 medals in the Commonwealth Games so far including 5 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze.
