Ranil sworn in as Interim President of Sri Lanka

  • The people of Sri Lanka have been actively campaigning for the resignation of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who was the president of the country, as the reason for the severe economic crisis in Sri Lanka. Subsequently, they also captured the Principal's Palace.
  • Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who fled to Singapore as the protests reached a critical stage, resigned as president on Thursday. Subsequently, Ranil Wickramasinghe, who was the Prime Minister, took office as the Interim Chancellor. Supreme Court Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya administered the oath of office to him.
Exemption for India to buy Russian Missiles - Bill passed in US Parliament
  • In 2014, the United States imposed economic sanctions on Russia in response to its annexation of Crimea. It also enacted the 'GATSA' Act to prevent other countries from buying equipment, including modern missiles, from Russia.
  • Under this law, the US imposed economic sanctions on Turkey, which had signed a deal to buy S-400 missiles from Russia. Unconcerned about this, India signed an agreement with Russia in 2019 to buy five S-400 missile systems worth Rs 35,000 crore.
  • Subsequently, for the past three years, there was a question whether the US would impose economic sanctions on India as well.
  • In this context, the GATTA Amendment Bill, which exempts India from the ban on buying S-400 missiles from Russia, was tabled in the House of Representatives of the US Parliament. After the majority of MPs expressed their support in the subsequent voice vote, the bill was declared passed.
Resolving the two-state border issue: Assam-Arunachal Chief Ministers' Agreement
  • The border dispute between the two states has been going on for a long time. Arunachal Pradesh became a Union Territory in 1972. At that time, traditional tribal lands were unilaterally transferred to Assam.
  • Later, after the statehood of Arunachal Pradesh in 1987, the Tripartite Committee recommended that lands in certain parts of Assam should be handed over to Arunachal Pradesh. Objecting to this, a case was filed in the Assam Court.
  • In this case, in order to solve this problem, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Kandu met and signed an agreement yesterday.
  • Accordingly, the number of problematic villages has been reduced from 123 to 86. Himanta said that efforts will be made to resolve the border issue by September 15.

  • Y-3023 Tunagiri, 17-A built at GRSE, Kolkata was commissioned by Defense Minister Mr. Rajnath Singh on 15 July 2022.
  • Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Harikumar, senior officers of Indian Navy and Ministry of Defense were present at the ceremony.
  • The ship is a successor to the B17A warship (Shivalik type) with enhanced combat capability, sophisticated weapons and sensor equipment and platform management systems. Also, construction of B17A warships is in various stages at Masakan Shipyard, GRSE.
The National Hydropower Corporation has signed an MoU for pioneering green hydrogen technology development
  • In line with the country's commitment to reduce carbon usage in the power sector in Leh and Kargil districts of the Union Territory of Ladakh, the National Hydropower Corporation has signed two MoUs for development of “pioneer green hydrogen technology”. These MoUs were signed in the presence of Mr. RK Mathur, Deputy Governor of Ladakh Union Territory.
  • According to the MoU for Leh district, a hydrogen cell based micro grid including hydrogen production will be developed to meet the electricity requirement of the National Hydropower Corporation guest house there. According to the agreement for Kargil district, hydrogen production will be scaled up commercially to produce hydrogen required by the Ladakh region.
