Rajya Sabha Election 2022

  • The Election Commission had announced that elections would be held on June 10 to fill 57 vacant seats in 15 states, including Tamil Nadu. Already, 41 MPs from 11 states, including Tamil Nadu, have been elected to the state assembly without contest.
  • Elections were held for 6 seats in Maharashtra, 4 seats each in Karnataka and Rajasthan and 2 MP seats in Haryana.
  • In Karnataka, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who contested on behalf of the BJP, won with 46 votes. Also, former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh, who contested on behalf of the Congress, won while actor Jagesh and Lehar Singh also won on behalf of the BJP.
  • Similarly, Pramod Tiwari, Mukul Wasnik and Randeep Surjiwala, who contested for the Congress in Rajasthan, and BJP's Kanshiyam Tiwari won.
  • Voting in Maharashtra and Haryana has been suspended following complaints that some people voted against the rules. The BJP won 3 of the 6 seats in Maharashtra and the Congress, Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party won 1 seat each in the early hours of this morning.
  • BJP's Piyush Goyal won by 48 votes. Shiv Sena's Sanjay Pawar lost the election. In Haryana, the BJP won one seat and the BJP-backed Independent one.
Discovery of an inscription dating back to 312 years at Valaiyankulam
  • Valayankulam historian Velmurugan informed that there is an ancient inscription in their town.
  • Led by Assistant Professor Muneeswaran, Department of History, Perungudi Saraswathi Narayanan College, students Ajithkumar, Dineshkumar, Suriyaprakash and Dharmar discovered an inscription bearing the name 'Thirumalai Mechchinar' in front of the Ganesha temple near Kanmaikkara in the area.
  • According to the inscription, it is 312 years old. Drama is one of the ancient arts of Tamils. There is also evidence of Tamil drama in books such as Tolkappiyam and Silappathikaram. The Nayaks who ruled Madurai from 1526 AD to 1736 AD excelled in administration and culture.
  • On the side of Rani Mangammal Road near Valaiyankulam Kanmai, under a banyan tree, 3 feet long, 2 feet wide and ten lines are inscribed in a separate black stone.
  • It reads, 'On the 15th day of the Saliya Vehicle Era, 1710, on a full moon day, on the Sabbath day, Thirumalai Mechinar returned to Valaiyankulam to pay homage to the famous Drama Arts Sangamariya Ganesha Temple and consecrate Tirumalai Mechan'.
20,000 crore to tackle food crisis - Sri Lankan PM Ranil announces
  • Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has already said that Sri Lanka needs Rs. 180 Lakhs Crores. Sri Lanka is facing a severe economic crisis unprecedented in 70 years due to insufficient foreign exchange reserves. The prices of essential commodities have gone up and people are starving for food.
  • Speaking at a meeting of Sri Lankan media owners, Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said, `20,000 crore has been allocated for the financial security of the country.
  • These funds have been allocated due to the prevailing food shortage environment. With this, at least 10 per cent of the total population of the country will be able to get 3 meals a day for free, 'he said.
Fertilizer imports - India lends Rs 429 crore to Sri Lanka
  • Sri Lanka has requested a loan to import 65,000 metric tons of urea fertilizer. On that basis, India has agreed to provide a loan of Rs 429 crore for the purchase of urea fertilizer from India. It has been informed that the agreement with the Exim Bank of India for this has been signed by the Secretary to the Ministry of Finance of Sri Lanka M. Sirivattana.
  • Earlier, Adiba Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had banned the import of chemical fertilizers, affecting about 50 per cent of the crop yield in Sri Lanka. Later, she admitted that the decision was wrong.
The Prime Minister inaugurated the In-Space Headquarters in Bhopal, Ahmedabad
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the headquarters of the Indian National Space Promotion and Accreditation Center (IN-SPACe) in Bhopal, Ahmedabad. During the event, MoUs were also exchanged for in-space and private companies to work in the aerospace applications and services sector.
  • Encouraging the private sector in the aerospace sector will give great impetus to the aerospace sector and provide new opportunities for talented youth in India. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Boy Patel and aerospace industry officials were present on the occasion.
The Prime Minister initiated various development projects during the 'Gujarat Pride Movement' in Navrasi
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the 'Gujarat Pride Movement'. He laid the foundation stone for various development projects during the ‘Gujarat Pride Movement’ in Goodwell, a tribal area in Navrasi.
  • This includes the launch of 7 projects, laying the foundation stone for 12 projects and Bhoomi Puja for 14 projects. These projects will help improve drinking water supply in the area along with increasing transport connectivity and expanding ease of living.
  • The event was attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Rajinikanth Patel, Union and State Ministers and people's representatives.
