ENGLISH
  • The International Monetary Fund has published a study by economists Surjit Balla, Arvind Virmani and Karan Pasin. Prior to the Corona impact in 2019, the proportion of the Indian population with low purchasing power was 0.8 per cent.
  • They are classified as living in extreme poverty. The number of people living in extreme poverty was similar in 2020, when the incidence of corona was at its peak. Their ratio did not rise.
  • This is because the central government provided 5 kg of rice or wheat and food items free of cost. The impact of the corona has blocked the distribution of free food items.
  • Extreme poverty in India has largely disappeared. The level of inequality in consumer consumption has dropped to a level not seen in 40 years.
  • This is made possible by federal subsidies, especially free food items. The free food scheme implemented by the Central Government during the Corona period has been extended till next September.
