- சுற்றுசூழல் பாதுகாப்பிற்கு உறுதுணையாக இருக்கும் மலைகள், மலைத்தொடர்களை சிறப்பிக்கும் வகையில் கடந்த 2003ம் ஆண்டு யுனஸ்கோ டிசம்பர் 11ம் தேதியை சர்வதேச மலை தினமாக அறிவித்தது.
- 2004 முதல் இயற்கை எழில் சூழ்ந்த மலை பிரதேசங்களில் மலைகளின் முக்கியத்துவம், மலைகளினால் சுற்றுசூழலுக்கு ஏற்படும் பாதுகாப்புகள், அவற்றின் முக்கியத்துவம், மலை வாழ் மக்களின் பாரம்பரியம் போன்றவைகளை மக்கள் அறிந்து கொள்ளும் வகையில் நிகழ்ச்சிகள் நடத்த வேண்டும் என அறிவுறுத்தியுள்ளது.
- மலைகளைப் பாதுகாக்கவும், மலைப்பிரதேசங்களில் வாழும் மக்களின் வாழ்க்கைத்தரத்தை மேம்படுத்தவும், மலையின் சுற்றுச்சூழலை பாதுகாக்கவும், 2002ஆம் ஆண்டில் மலைகளின் கூட்டாளி என்கிற அமைப்பு உருவாக்கப்பட்டது.
- இந்த அமைப்பு உலகம் முழுவதும் தொடர்பை ஏற்படுத்திக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. இவ்வமைப்பின் முயற்சியால் 2002 ஆம் ஆண்டில் ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் அவை டிசம்பர் 11 ஆம் நாளை பன்னாட்டு மலைகள் நாளாக அறிவித்தது.

- 17 ஐக்கிய நாடுகளின் நிலையான வளர்ச்சி இலக்குகளில் மூன்று மலை இலக்குகள் மலைவாழ் சமூகங்களுக்கான நிலையான வளர்ச்சியை மேம்படுத்துவதற்கு அர்ப்பணிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன:
- இலக்கு 6.6: "2030க்குள், மலைகள், காடுகள், ஈரநிலங்கள், ஆறுகள், நீர்நிலைகள் மற்றும் ஏரிகள் உள்ளிட்ட நீர் தொடர்பான சுற்றுச்சூழல் அமைப்புகளைப் பாதுகாத்து மீட்டெடுக்க வேண்டும்";

- December 11, 2003 was declared UNESCO's International Mountain Day to highlight the mountains and mountain ranges that contribute to environmental protection. Since 2004, it has been suggested that programs should be held in the mountainous areas to make people aware of the importance of mountains, the protection of the environment by the mountains, their importance and the heritage of the hill people.
- The Mountains Partner was formed in 2002 to protect the mountains, improve the quality of life of the people living in the mountains, and protect the mountain environment.
- The organization is making contact around the world. At the initiative of this organization, in 2002 the United Nations declared December 11 as the International Day of the Mountains.
- The Mountain Partnership under the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO-UN) is the United Nations voluntary alliance to work together for mountain peoples and environments. Three mountain targets among 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are dedicated to the promotion of sustainable development for mountain communities:
- Target 6.6: “By 2030, protect and restore water related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes”;
- Target 15.1: “By 2030, ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands, mountains and drylands, in line with obligations under international agreements”;
- Target 15.4: “By 2030, ensure the conservation of mountain ecosystems, including their biodiversity, in order to enhance their capacity to provide benefits that are essential for sustainable development.”
- According to the FAO-UN, the main theme for this year’s International Mountain Day is “Mountains and Biodiversity.” This theme allows for all UNA-USA chapters, regardless of affiliation, to support biodiversity in their communities.
