1.53 lakh crore bank loan waiver written off

  • Banks are writing off non-performing loans every financial year. Experts say banks are engaging in such activities to reduce the value of weekly loans.
  • In the last financial year alone, banks have written off weekly loans worth Rs 1.53 lakh crore. This is the 2nd highest amount of weekly loans written off in the last 10 years. In the last financial year 2018-19, banks had written off weekly loans worth Rs 2.54 lakh crore.
  • Importantly, 55.65 per cent of the loans written off in the last financial year were written off in the last quarter alone.

The central government has allocated a maximum of Rs 10,870 crore to UP for the 'Jal Jeevan' project
  • The central government has developed the 'Jal Jeevan' scheme to provide drinking water pipe connections to homes across the country. The central government has set a target of implementing the scheme by 2024. Accordingly, Rs 50,000 crore has been allocated for this project in the current budget.
  • Meanwhile, the Central Jal Shakti Department has been allocating a certain amount of money to all the states since 2019 to implement the Jal Jeevan project.
  • Of that, Rs 6,998.97 crore was allocated to West Bengal last week. Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh have been allocated Rs 3,410 crore and Rs 5,117 crore respectively.
  • A total of Rs 9,262 crore has been declared for the North Eastern States. In this context, the Central Water Authority yesterday set aside a maximum of Rs 10,870 crore for the state of Uttar Pradesh, which is set to go to the polls next year.
  • There are 2.63 crore houses in 97 thousand villages in Uttar Pradesh. Out of them 30.04 lakh households have been provided with drinking water pipes.
  • Prior to the Jal Jeevan project, only 5.16 lakh households had access to drinking water. According to federal government sources, 2.33 crore households still need to be provided with drinking water pipes.

The target is to produce military equipment worth Rs 1.75 lakh crore over the next five years. It also plans to export equipment worth Rs 35,000 crore.
  • This will increase the chances of producing military equipment locally. This allocation is made to the Military Skills and Defense Innovation Agency (DIO).
  • The funds will be used for research and development work, including the production of military equipment and the development of aircraft for the Air Force.

  • It has been implementing numerous community welfare schemes such as providing skill development training, providing drinking water to the villagers, clearing lake ponds, canals, providing saplings and planting. The Nationally Appreciated Paper (DNPL) plant has been selected for the Gold Peacock Award for Community Responsibility 2020.
