2000-year-old Tamil Brahmi script discovered in Veedur
- A recent surface survey in Veedur village of Villupuram district has unearthed 2000-year-old pottery sherds inscribed with Tamil Brahmi script. The Tamil words "Nora I" and "Pasi" are inscribed in Tamil Brahmi script on two sherds. Another sherd has symbols used in ancient times.
- The Government of Tamil Nadu, under Section 37(1) of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, declared Aritapatti as a Biodiversity Heritage Site in November 2022, Kasampatti was declared in March 2025 and Elathur Lake was declared in September 2025.
- Following this, Nagamalai Hills in Erode district, covering an area of 32,22,50 hectares, has been declared as the fourth biological heritage site in the state. Biodiversity heritage sites are ecologically significant areas that support unique and fragile ecosystems.
- They protect rare, threatened and critically endangered species, preserve and protect their evolutionary significance, and strengthen cultural ties with nature. Its landscape features deep water bodies, shallow estuaries, mudflats and rocky areas that support rich biodiversity.
- According to surveys conducted by the Tamil Nadu Integrated Bird Census (2024), 138 plant species, 118 bird species (30 migratory and 88 endemic), 7 mammals, 11 reptiles, 5 spiders and 71 insect species have been recorded here.
- The major species here include the great spotted eagle, the pale cat hawk and the pennellis vulture. In terms of flora, there are 138 plant species under 48 genera and 114 genera. This includes 125 dicotyledons and 13 monocotyledons.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, October 8, inaugurated the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The airport has the distinction of being India's first fully digital airport. The World Bank has also predicted that the Indian economy will decline to 6.3% in the 2026-27 financial year.
