Srishchandra Murmu appointed as Deputy Governor of RBI
- Srishchandra Murmu was appointed as the Deputy Governor of RBI for a period of three years by the central government. There are currently 4 Deputy Governors in the RBI.
- Among them, the Appointments Committee of the Central Cabinet has approved the appointment of Srishchandra Murmu as his replacement, as the term of M. Rajeswara Rao ends on October 8, sources in the central government said on Monday.
- He is currently the Managing Director of the RBI and will take charge as the Deputy Governor of the RBI on or after October 9, sources said. According to the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, there should be 4 Deputy Governors.
- Apart from M. Rajeswara Rao, there are 3 Deputy Governors - D. Rabi Shankar, Swaminathan J and Poonam Gupta. M. Rajeswara Rao was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor for a period of three years in September 2020. After that, his term was extended for one year in 2023. It was extended for another year in 2024. He will complete his 5-year term on October 8.
