11 sites selected for UNESCO World Heritage List

  • The military forts of the Maratha rulers of India have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, it has been reported. The decision was taken at the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) underway in Paris.
  • 'Maratha military forts' have been included in India's nomination for UNESCO World Heritage Site for the year 2024-25.
  • The Maratha military forts include Salher Fort, Shivneri Fort, Lohgad, Khanderi Fort, Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgarh, Suvarnadurg, Panhala Fort, Vijaydurg and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra and Senji Fort in Tamil Nadu. These Maratha military forts and forts were built between the 17th and 19th centuries.
  • With the inclusion of Maratha military bases in the UNESCO list, the number of UNESCO heritage sites in India has increased to 44.
  • The Thanjavur Brihadeeswarar Temple, Kumbakonam Airavateswarar Temple, Jayakondam Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple, Mamallapuram Monuments and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway are the five UNESCO-recognized World Heritage Sites in Tamil Nadu. The Red Fort is the sixth site on the list.
