Eemat Thazhi found in Palaiyapatti near Chengipatti
- Sangam-era Eemat Thazhi, used to bury soldiers who died in battle, were found in an area called ‘Thazhavari’ in South Palaiyapatti near Chengipatti in Thanjavur district. This is a burial method. These Eemat Thazhi are also known as Mudumakal Thazhi, Mudumakal Saadi, Eemat Pezhi, and Madamataka Panai.
- This burial method has been around since the Sangam period. It may have been an Eemat Thazhi taken from soldiers who died in battle. Furthermore, more than 25 Thazhi, which have wide mouths with intricate designs and have beautiful designs such as chain links on the necks, are found scattered and damaged due to soil erosion.
- Among these, remains of iron objects are also found in a damaged state. Since more than one coffin is found in some of the small-sized Eemat tombs, it is understood that the bodies of those who died in the war may have been cremated and the remaining ashes placed in small coffins and buried in small-sized Eemat tombs.
- Moreover, when attempting to conduct excavations, since the entire Eemat forest area is government land, there is no need to acquire government land.
- Based on this, if the Department of Archaeology of the Tamil University or the Department of Archaeology of the Tamil Nadu Government conducts a study of the Eemat forest and the area considered as the habitat area, the ancient history of the Sangam period of the Chola region, the lifestyle and culture of the people of that time, can be revealed.
