Repo rate at 6.25% - Reserve Bank of India announcement
- The six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday cut the repo rate, the rate at which the Reserve Bank lends to other banks, by 25 basis points to 6.25 percent, the latest reduction coming after the RBI had kept the repo rate unchanged for the past two years.
- This is the first interest rate cut initiated by the RBI in five years, the last reduction was in May 2020. When the Reserve Bank of India reduces the repo rate, all external benchmark lending rates (EBLR) linked to the repo rate will come down, and borrowers will see their monthly installments (EMIs) reduced.
India creates history by generating 100 GW of solar
- India's solar power sector has witnessed an extraordinary 3450% growth in capacity over the past decade, rising from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100 GW by 2025. As of January 31, 2025, India's total solar installed capacity is 100.33 GW.
- Solar power dominates India's renewable energy growth, accounting for 47% of the total installed renewable energy capacity. In 2024, a record 24.5 GW of solar capacity was added.
- This represents a more than two-fold increase in solar power capacity compared to 2023. 18.5 GW of utility-scale solar power capacity was installed last year, an increase of almost 2.8 times compared to 2023.
- Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh are among the top performing states, contributing significantly to India's total utility-scale solar installations.
