Composite index of eight major industries March 2024
  • The Composite Index (ICI) of eight major industries increased by 5.2 percent in March 2024 compared to the March 2023 index. Production of cement, coal, electricity, natural gas, steel and crude oil recorded positive growth in March 2024.
  • The ICI measures the combined and individual production efficiency of eight major industries: cement, coal, crude oil, electricity, fertilizers, natural gas, refined products and steel. Eight major industries account for 40.27 percent of the weight of goods included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP).
  • The final growth rate of the index of eight major industries for December 2023 has been revised to 5.0 percent. The overall growth rate of ICI in 2023-24 is reported to be 7.5 percent as compared to the same period last year.
  • Cement production increased by 10.6 percent during this period. Coal production increased by 8.7 percent. Crude oil production increased by 2.0 percent and electricity generation by 8.0 percent. Fertilizer production decreased by 1.3 percent. 
  • Natural gas production increased by 6.3 percent. Petroleum refinery output fell 0.3 percent. Steel production increased by 5.5 percent. Data for January, February and March 2024 is provisional. The index numbers of major industries are revised or finalized as per the details received from the source institutions. Code for April 2024 will be released on Friday 31st May 2024.
Dinesh Kumar Tripathi takes over as Commander of Indian Navy
  • Hari Kumar who served as the Commander of the Indian Navy retired. In this situation, Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who served as the Chief Director of Naval Operations, took charge as the 26th Naval Commander of the country today (April 30) following his official appointment as the Commander of the Navy on the 19th.
  • Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi was the commanding officer of the warships INS Kirch and INS Kavach.
MoU with Norwegian company National Grid Power Corporation to implement floating solar power technology in India
  • India's largest hydropower developer, the National Hydropower Corporation, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Ocean Sun, a Norwegian firm to operate as a floating solar power technology provider. 
  • According to the MoU, the National Grid Power Corporation and Ocean Sun will explore key areas of cooperation to demonstrate Ocean Sun's floating solar technology based on solar panels.
  • The MoU was signed virtually on April 29, 2024 by Mr. VR Srivastava, Managing Director (Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen), National Grid Power Corporation, and Mr. Christian Torvold, CEO, Ocean Sun.
