• International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action 2024: Each year on April 4th, the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action is commemorated. The day was declared by the United Nations General Assembly on December 8th, 2005. 
• This day aims to raise awareness about landmines, request aid for mine action work, and progress toward their eradication. The international mine action community, directed by the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), begins planning actions a week ahead of time.

History of International Day of Mine Awareness

• International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action 2024: On December 8th, 2005, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared that the 4th of April will be formally established and commemorated as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action every year. 
• It was discovered for the first time on April 4th, 2006. Sustained efforts by states, as well as assistance from the United Nations (UN), as well as other relevant organisations, to assist in the establishment and development of nationwide mine action potentials in nations where mines and explosives remnants of war pose a serious threat to people’s safety, health, and lives, or obstruct economic and social development on a national and local level.

Significance

• International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action 2024: Every year at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York, UNMAS hosts a multimedia exhibition to raise awareness about the dangers posed by mines, explosive relics of war, and improvised explosive devices. 
• UNMAS announces a public photo exhibition featuring the “Safe Ground” campaign, that also promotes the link between mine action, sport, and the Sustainable Development Goals by demonstrating how substituting minefields with sports fields tends to bring societies together and raises awareness about armed conflict victims and survivors.

International Mine Awareness Day 2024 Theme

• International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action 2024: International Mine Awareness Day 2024 Theme is Protecting Lives, Building Peace.
• Disabled survivors of explosive hazards and all people with disabilities living through conflicts is the dedicated to the 2024 commemoration of the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action (4 April).

International Mine Awareness Day 2023 Theme

• International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action 2024: In 2023 the United Nations Mine Action Service will acknowledge the day under the campaign “Mine Action Cannot Wait”, highlighting decades of contamination in Cambodia, the Lao People's Democratic Republic and Viet Nam, as well as draw attention to recent explosive ordnance contamination.
• Every year, International Mine Awareness Day is celebrated with a different theme. 2022 year’s theme is “Safe Ground, Safe Steps, Safe Home”. Given below is the meaning of this theme.
• Safe Ground – Safe Ground is the name of the global campaign to “turn minefields into playing fields,” which was launched in 2019 by the Secretary-General of the United Nations. The idea is to remove landmines and other explosive hazards from the Earth to make it safe for development.
• Safe Steps – “Safe Steps” highlights the fear that far too many people feel as they move about, not knowing whether they will accidentally set off an explosive that could harm or kill them at any time. In addition, “Safe Steps” discusses how deminers approach contaminated areas and how new technology is used to safely remove explosive hazards.
• Safe Home – “Safe Home” is about restoring the personal security of individuals and communities in post-conflict settings. It is difficult to feel at home without community and safety because there is no place like home.
