The first Earth Day was observed in the year 1970 owing to the oil spill incident caused in the United States. Earth Day History

• WORLD EARTH DAY 2023 - 22nd APRIL: An incident happened on January 28, 1969 when a well drilled by Union Oil Platform A blew and spewed three million gallons of oil on the coast of Santa Barbara, California. More than 10,000 seabirds, dolphins, seals, and sea lions were killed as a result of this incident.
• This incident attracted the sight of environmental activists all around the world and Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin was inspired to observe a day dedicated to the earth. Denis Hayes thus organized the first Earth Day in the year 1970 as national environmental teach-in.
• The name environmental teach-in was not much effective in gathering national attention and Denis Hayes felt the need for taking up a new name. One volunteer, Julian Koenig, came up with ideas for names and campaign ads like Ecology Day, Environment Day, Earth Day and E Day. 
• He said his favorite was Earth Day as it rhymes with birthday and Koenig had his birthday on 22nd April. Thus the name Earth Day was adopted.
