8,000 government schools in India with no enrollment in 2025-2026 academic year, says Union Education Ministry
- Around 7,993 schools across the country have not had a single student enrolled, which is a percentage decrease from the previous academic year. It has been reported that this is more than 5,000 more than the number of 12,954 in the last academic year.
- In the current academic year, about 20,817 teachers are working in 7,993 schools with no enrollment. Out of them, 17,965 teachers are working in West Bengal. Moreover, West Bengal is at the top with 3,812 schools, which is surprisingly high at the national level.
- This is followed by Telangana with 2,245 schools among the states with no enrollment, followed by Madhya Pradesh (463 schools). Of these schools, 1,016 teachers are working in Telangana and 223 in Muzaffarnagar in Madhya Pradesh.
- Similarly, it has been reported that there is no admission in 81 schools in Uttar Pradesh. The Uttar Pradesh Education Board had said that it is preparing to cancel the recognition of schools across the state that have not had any admission for the last three academic years.
- There are more than one lakh schools across the country with only one teacher, with more than 33 lakh students studying. The state of Andhra Pradesh has the highest number of these schools. It is followed by Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Lakshadweep.
- It is reported that the number of one-teacher schools, which was 18,190 in 2022-23, has decreased to 1,10,971 in the 2023-24 academic year, a decrease of about 6 percent.
- It has been reported that there are no schools with only one teacher in the states of Haryana, Maharashtra, Goa, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and the union territories of Puducherry, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, and Delhi.
